Ce que nous avons appris en 3ème année
Lesson 1 of 5
35 min
It is the first French lesson of P4 at a primary school in Kicukiro. Madame Uwase walks in, smiles and says: « Bonjour, les enfants ! »
You already know many French words from P3. In this unit you will wake them all up again, starting with the words you use every day in your classroom.
Read the dialogue. Then read it again out loud with a friend.
La maîtresse : « Bonjour, les enfants ! »
Les élèves : « Bonjour, madame ! »
La maîtresse : « Asseyez-vous, s'il vous plaît. Ouvrez vos cahiers. »
Mugisha : « Madame, je n'ai pas de stylo. »
La maîtresse : « Keza, tu as un stylo pour Mugisha ? »
Keza : « Oui, madame. Voici un stylo, Mugisha. »
Mugisha : « Merci, Keza ! »
La maîtresse : « Maintenant, regardez le tableau. Écoutez et répétez. »
La maîtresse is the woman teacher. A man teacher is le maître. Voici means here is.

Two sentences that help YOU when you are lost: Je ne comprends pas. (I don't understand.) and Répétez, s'il vous plaît. (Please say it again.)
Every French noun is either masculine or feminine. The little word in front tells you which one.
There is no rule you can see in the word itself. Stylo is masculine and gomme is feminine, and that is that.
Say cahier, crayon, classe, quatre. They all start with the same hard [k] sound, like the start of Kigali. In French, the letters c (before a, o, u), qu and k all make this sound.
Play "teacher" with a friend. One of you gives a consigne (« Levez-vous ! », « Ouvrez vos cahiers ! ») and the other does it. Then swap. Next, point at five things on your desk and name them with un or une.
Tip
Give every noun its name tag. Never learn gomme alone. Learn une gomme, as one word, like a first name and a family name. Then you will always know if it is un or une.
