Au marché
Lesson 1 of 4
35 min
Walk through a Rwandan market and you will see women and men, young and old, selling fruit, vegetables, clothes and soap.
In this story, Tom wants to sell his bananas, but the people in his village think that a man should not sell fruit. What will Tom do?
You can read this story with pictures and listen to it read aloud in French. Listen once, then read along.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| le marché | the market |
| vendre | to sell |
| acheter | to buy |
| un plateau | a tray |
| un régime de bananes | a bunch of bananas |
| mûr / mûre | ripe |
| sucré / sucrée | sweet |
| personne n'achète | nobody buys |
| vide | empty |
| l'argent | money |
| le savon, le sucre, le pain | soap, sugar, bread |
| acheter (to buy) | vendre (to sell) |
|---|---|
| j'achète | je vends |
| tu achètes | tu vends |
| il / elle achète | il / elle vend |
| ils / elles achètent | ils / elles vendent |
Two things to notice. Acheter gets an accent (è) in j'achète. And the ending -ent in ils achètent and ils vendent is SILENT: elle achète and elles achètent sound exactly the same.
The people said: « Seulement les femmes vendent des fruits. » Was that fair? What did Tom do? In Rwanda today, girls and boys can learn any honest job. Say in French what YOU would like to sell one day: « Je vends des … »

Tip
The silent tail. In French, -ent at the end of a verb is a tail you write but never say. Elle achète and elles achètent sound the same. So when you WRITE about more than one person, do not forget the silent tail!
