Au marché
Lesson 4 of 4
40 min
Keza's mother gives her 2000 francs and sends her to the market for tomatoes and avocados. Keza is proud: this is the first time she goes shopping alone.
Being polite at the market matters. A friendly greeting and a « s'il vous plaît » make every seller smile.
Keza : « Bonjour, madame ! »
La vendeuse : « Bonjour, ma fille ! Qu'est-ce que tu veux ? »
Keza : « Je voudrais un kilo de tomates, s'il vous plaît. C'est combien ? »
La vendeuse : « Un kilo de tomates, c'est huit cents francs. »
Keza : « Et les avocats ? »
La vendeuse : « Deux cents francs l'avocat. »
Keza : « Alors, je prends aussi trois avocats. »
La vendeuse : « Voilà ! Ça fait mille quatre cents francs. »
Keza : « Voici deux mille francs. »
La vendeuse : « Et voici ta monnaie : six cents francs. Merci, et bonne journée ! »
Keza : « Merci, madame. Au revoir ! »
Check the sums: 800 + 3 × 200 = 1400 francs. Keza pays 2000, so her change is 2000 − 1400 = 600 francs.
| The customer says | English |

| C'est trop cher ! | It's too expensive! |
| Je prends … | I'll take … |
| Voici … francs. | Here are … francs. |
| The seller says | English |
|---|---|
| Qu'est-ce que vous voulez ? / Vous désirez ? | What would you like? |
| Ça fait … francs. | That comes to … francs. |
| Voici votre / ta monnaie. | Here is your change. |
| C'est bon marché ! | It's cheap! |
| Bonne journée ! | Have a nice day! |
Je veux means I want. It is fine with friends, but with an adult it sounds bossy. Je voudrais means I would like, and it is the polite way to ask:
Set up a pretend stall with a price board (use Mama Keza's prices from the last lesson). One partner is the seller (le vendeur or la vendeuse), the other is the customer (le client or la cliente). Greet, ask for two things, ask the price, pay, get your change, and say goodbye. Then swap.
Write your own market dialogue of at least six lines. Use Je voudrais, C'est combien ?, Ça fait and la monnaie.
Tip
The polite shopping chain: Bonjour → Je voudrais … s'il vous plaît → C'est combien ? → Voici … francs → Merci, au revoir. Five links, and every seller will be happy to see you again.
Ask politely for a pineapple.
Answer: « Je voudrais un ananas, s'il vous plaît. »
The seller says « Ça fait neuf cents francs. » How much do you pay?
Answer: 900 francs.
You pay with 1000 francs for something that costs 700 francs. What is your change, in French?
Answer: trois cents francs.
The price is too high. What do you say?
Answer: « C'est trop cher ! »
Why is je voudrais better than je veux with a seller?
Answer: Je voudrais is polite; je veux can sound bossy to an adult.
