Au marché
Lesson 2 of 4
35 min
It is Saturday morning. Umutoni goes to the market with her mother. There are mountains of tomatoes, piles of avocados, green bananas, beans of every colour, and people calling out their prices.
Before they leave home, Umutoni writes the shopping list, in French!
Ma liste de courses
un kilo de tomates
trois avocats
un ananas
un kilo de haricots
un tas d'oignons
beaucoup de mangues !
Une liste de courses = a shopping list. Un tas = a pile (the way many things are sold at the market).
| Les fruits | English | Les légumes | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| la banane | banana | la tomate | tomato |
| l'avocat | avocado | l'oignon | onion |
After a word that tells HOW MUCH, French uses only de, never des:
But with no amount word, you say des: J'achète des tomates.
Look at the photo of a vegetable stall below. Can you find les tomates, les haricots verts (green beans), les aubergines (the purple ones), les poivrons (green peppers) and les pommes de terre? Point and say: « Voici les tomates ! »
Write your own shopping list of five things. Use un kilo de, un tas de, trois …, beaucoup de.

Tip
Amounts are greedy: they keep only de. A kilo, a pile, a bunch, lots: as soon as you say how much, the s of des disappears. Un kilo de tomates, beaucoup de mangues.
What is l'ananas?
Answer: the pineapple.
Fruit or vegetable: la patate douce?
Answer: a vegetable (the sweet potato).
Correct the mistake: un kilo des haricots.
Answer: un kilo de haricots.
Say in French: lots of avocados.
Answer: beaucoup d'avocats (de becomes d' before a vowel).
Write the plural: une tomate → des …
Answer: des tomates.
