Les repas
Lesson 1 of 4
30 min
It is eleven o'clock at school. Mugisha's tummy makes a noise: grrr! He whispers to Keza: « J'ai faim ! »
Today you will meet a crocodile who is even hungrier than Mugisha. You will learn how to say I am hungry and I am thirsty in French.
You can read this story with pictures and listen to it read aloud in French. Listen once, then read along.
Il était une fois is how French stories begin, like 'Once upon a time'. Il avait faim means 'he was hungry'.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| la faim | hunger |
| avoir faim | to be hungry |
| avoir soif | to be thirsty |
| chercher | to look for |
| de quoi manger | something to eat |
| doucement | slowly, quietly |
| sans faire de bruit | without making a noise |
| soudain | suddenly |
| content / contente | happy, pleased |
| de nouveau | again |
In English you are hungry. In French you have hunger. So we use the verb avoir (to have), never être.
| avoir faim / avoir soif | English |
|---|---|
| j'ai faim | I am hungry |
| tu as faim | you are hungry |
| il / elle a faim | he / she is hungry |
| nous avons soif | we are thirsty |
| vous avez soif | you (all) are thirsty |
| ils / elles ont soif | they are thirsty |
Be careful: « Je suis faim » is wrong. Say « J'ai faim ».
Mugisha : Keza, j'ai faim !
Keza : Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Et j'ai soif !
Mugisha : Il est midi ?
Keza : Non, il est onze heures. Tiens, une banane !
Mugisha : Merci ! Maintenant, je suis content, comme le crocodile !
Keza : Ha ha ! Mais à midi, tu as encore faim !
Tiens ! means 'Here you are!' when you give something to a friend. Encore means 'again' or 'still'.
Tip
The empty basket. Imagine your tummy is carrying an empty basket of hunger. You have the basket, so you say j'ai faim. When you drink water, the basket of thirst is gone: je n'ai plus soif!
