Most people in Rwanda eat in the morning, at midday and in the evening. Some children also eat a small snack after school.
In French, each meal has its own name. Let's follow Uwase through one day and find out.
Le matin, à six heures et demie, Uwase prend le petit-déjeuner. Elle mange de la bouillie et elle boit du thé au lait.
À midi, c'est le déjeuner. À l'école, Uwase mange du riz et des haricots. Elle boit de l'eau.
À quatre heures, elle a un peu faim. Elle mange un avocat : c'est le goûter.
Le soir, à sept heures, toute la famille prend le dîner ensemble. Ce soir, il y a de l'isombe avec du riz. Papa dit : « Bon appétit ! »

To say at a meal, use au. All four meal words are masculine (le), and à + le always becomes au.
Never say à le dîner. Always say au dîner.
Tip
Small lunch first. Petit means small, so the petit-déjeuner is the 'small lunch' that comes first in the morning. Then comes the real déjeuner at midday, and the dîner when the sun goes down.
