Les repas
Lesson 4 of 4
35 min
In Rwanda, before a meal, we wash our hands and wait for everyone. We say thank you to the cook.
Today Habimana eats dinner at his friend Keza's home. Let's learn what polite children say at the table in French.
Maman : À table, les enfants ! Lavez-vous les mains d'abord.
Keza : Oui, maman. Habimana, voici le savon.
Habimana : Merci, Keza.
Maman : Bon appétit !
Habimana : Merci, madame. Bon appétit à vous aussi !
Maman : Habimana, tu veux encore du riz ?
Habimana : Oui, s'il vous plaît. C'est délicieux !
Keza : Habimana, passe-moi l'eau, s'il te plaît.
Habimana : Voilà !
Maman : Tu veux de la viande ?
Habimana : Non, merci, madame. J'ai assez mangé. Je n'ai plus faim.

To talk about food you like in general, use aimer with le, la, l', les (not du):
Compare: « J'aime le riz » (I like rice) but « Je mange du riz » (I eat some rice).
Tip
Tu or vous? Talk to a friend with tu: « s'il te plaît », « passe-moi ». Talk to an adult with vous: « s'il vous plaît », « passez-moi ». That is why Habimana says « s'il vous plaît » to Keza's mother.
What do you say to everyone before you start eating?
