La nature et les animaux
Lesson 1 of 4
35 min
In Rwanda, cows are very special. People give a cow as a sign of friendship, and the Girinka programme gives a cow to families who need one. Many families also keep goats, chickens or rabbits.
Animals that live with people are called domestic animals (les animaux domestiques). Let's spend the holidays on a farm with Keza.

Most French nouns just add an -s in the plural, and you don't hear it: une vache → des vaches, un lapin → des lapins. But some endings change:
| Ending | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| -al → -aux | un animal, un cheval, un journal | des animaux, des chevaux, des journaux |
| -eau → -eaux | un veau, un taureau, un oiseau | des veaux, des taureaux, des oiseaux |
| -s, -x, -z: no change | une souris, une noix | des souris, des noix |
Listen: in animal → animaux and cheval → chevaux, you can hear the change. In veau → veaux, you only see it.
Talk about a farm you know, in your family or in your village: « Chez ma grand-mère, il y a deux vaches, trois chèvres et des poules. Mon cousin nourrit les animaux. Le chien garde la maison. »

Tip
The -al family changes its clothes. In the plural, words ending in -al take off their l and put on -aux: animal → animaux, cheval → chevaux. The -eau family just adds a little x hat: veau → veaux, oiseau → oiseaux.
