La nature et les animaux
Lesson 4 of 4

If you visit Akagera, you will see hippos in the lakes and rivers. They spend the whole day in the water. Why?
An old African story gives a funny answer. Read it, then use it to practise two French sounds that are easy to mix up: [o] as in l'eau and [u] as in le loup.
This is a short retelling. Strong readers can read the full story with pictures and listen to it in French.
» crie Lapin.
« Oh, pardon, mon ami ! Je ne t'ai pas vu. Excuse-moi ! » dit Hippo.
Mais Lapin n'écoute pas. Il est très en colère. « Tu l'as fait exprès ! Un jour, tu vas le payer ! »
| French | English |
|---|---|
| un poil, des poils | a hair, the hair (fur) of an animal |
| doux, douce | soft |
| Pardon ! Excuse-moi ! | Sorry! Excuse me! |
| en colère | angry |
| exprès | on purpose |
| le feu, les flammes | fire, the flames |
| brûler | to burn |
| pleurer | to cry |
| depuis ce jour | since that day |
Hippo said sorry, but Lapin did not listen. Was Lapin right? What would you do if a friend stepped on your foot by accident? In real life, hippos stay in the water during the day to protect their skin from the sun, and they come out at night to eat grass.
| Sound | How to write it | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| [o] as in l'eau | o, ô | le vélo, la moto, le dos, tôt |
| au | jaune, chaud, le crapaud (toad) | |
| eau | l'eau, beau, le veau, l'oiseau | |
| [u] as in le loup | ou | le loup (wolf), la poule, le mouton, doux, toujours, rouge |
| où, oû | Où ? le goût (taste) |
Say these pairs out loud. Only the vowel changes, but the meaning changes too: le dos (the back) – doux (soft); tôt (early) – tout (all); beau (beautiful) – le bout (the end); le veau (the calf) – vous (you).
Write five or six sentences. Use the words from this unit, a comparison and parce que. Here is a model:

Tip
Round mouth, kissing mouth. For [o] (eau, beau, veau), open your mouth in a round O, like when you are surprised. For [u] (loup, doux, vous), push your lips forward, small and tight, as if you were blowing out a candle.
