Let's begin
Mugisha lines up the shoes at the door.
Each person takes off 2 shoes. He counts them: 2, 4, 6, 8.
His sister comes home and kicks off her shoes. How many now? Today you will jump like Mugisha.
Shoes come in pairs. One pair is 2 shoes.
| Pairs | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shoes | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
Say the bottom row out loud: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
Look at what you do each time. You add 2.
Each step adds 2, not 1.
Careful! If you hear yourself say 9, you have slipped off your jump. Hop back to 8 and add 2 again.
One hand has 5 fingers. Hold up your hands.
1 hand is 5. 2 hands are 10. 3 hands are 15.
Say it: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.
The step is 5 every time.
Worked example
5, 10, 15, ___.
Step 1 Find the step. 5 and 5 more make 10. The step is add 5.
Step 2 Add the step to the last number. 15 and 5 more make 20.
Habimana ties his sticks into bundles of ten.
Say it: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.
The step is 10. Only the tens digit changes. The ones stay 0.
A pattern can use any step. Try 3, 6, 9, 12. The step there is 3.
Count in 2s from 2. Look only at the last digit.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
The last digits go 2, 4, 6, 8, 0. Then they start again.
Is your last digit 3, 5, 7 or 9? Then you have left the pattern.
Hop back to the last good number and jump again.
Tip
Same jump, every time
A pattern is like jumping from stone to stone across the Nyabarongo. Every jump is the same size.
Say the step out loud before you move: add 2... add 2... add 2.
Sing the tens: 10, 20, 30, 40.
