Ce que nous avons appris en 3ème année
Lesson 2 of 5
35 min
It is seven o'clock in the morning. Ishimwe is late for school, and he cannot find his school bag anywhere. Has this ever happened to you?
His mother helps him look. Listen to how they talk about where things are.
Ishimwe : « Maman, où est mon sac ? »
Maman : « Il est sur la chaise ? »
Ishimwe : « Non, il n'est pas sur la chaise. »
Maman : « Il est sous le lit ? »
Ishimwe : « Non, il n'est pas sous le lit. »
Maman : « Regarde derrière la porte. »
Ishimwe : « Oui ! Il est derrière la porte ! Merci, maman ! »
Maman : « Et ton cahier ? Il est dans le sac ? »
Ishimwe : « Oui, il est dans le sac. Au revoir, maman ! »
Où est … ? means Where is …? Il n'est pas means it is not.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| la maison | the house |
| le salon | the sitting room |
| la cuisine | the kitchen |
| la chambre | the bedroom |
| la cour | the yard (compound) |
| le lit | the bed |
| la porte | the door |
| la fenêtre | the window |
| le placard | the cupboard |
| le panier | the basket |
| French | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sur | on | Le livre est sur la table. |
| sous | under | Le chat est sous le lit. |
| dans | in, inside | Le cahier est dans le sac. |
| devant | in front of | La chaise est devant la table. |
| derrière | behind | Le sac est derrière la porte. |
| à côté de | next to | La cuisine est à côté du salon. |
When you answer « Où est … ? », you do not repeat the thing. You say il or elle (it).
So le and un go with il. La and une go with elle.
In French, the letters ch sound like the sh in English shoe. Say: la chaise, la chambre, le chat, chez moi. Never say la tchaise!
Hide a pencil somewhere in your classroom or your house. Your friend asks « Où est le crayon ? » and guesses: « Il est sous la table ? » You answer « Oui ! » or « Non, il n'est pas sous la table. » Then swap.
Tip
Sur or sous? They look like twins, but sous is the longer word: it goes further DOWN, under things. Sur is short and sits on top.
Say in French: The cat is under the table.
Answer: Le chat est sous la table.
The book is on the bed. Answer the question « Où est le livre ? »
Answer: Il est sur le lit. (le livre is masculine, so il.)
Il or elle? « Où est la règle ? — ___ est dans le sac. »
Answer: Elle (la règle is feminine).
What is la cuisine in English?
Answer: the kitchen.
Write: The chair is in front of the door.
Answer: La chaise est devant la porte.
