Ce que nous avons appris en 3ème année
Lesson 3 of 5
35 min
In September the rains come back to Rwanda. One morning the sun is shining; one hour later, big grey clouds cover the hills and the rain drums on the roof of your classroom.
People talk about the weather and the time every day. Today you will do it in French.
Gatete : « Bonjour, Keza ! Quelle heure est-il ? »
Keza : « Il est sept heures et demie. »
Gatete : « Brr ! Il fait froid ce matin. »
Keza : « Oui. Et regarde le ciel : il y a des nuages. »
Gatete : « Oh non ! Il pleut ! »
Keza : « Vite ! Entrons dans la classe ! »
Ce matin means this morning. Le ciel is the sky. Vite ! means Quick!
The question is Quel temps fait-il ? (What is the weather like?)
| French | English |
|---|---|
| Il fait beau. | The weather is nice. |
| Il fait chaud. | It is hot. |
| Il fait froid. | It is cold. |
| Il pleut. | It is raining. |
| Il y a du soleil. | It is sunny. |
| Il y a du vent. | It is windy. |
| Il y a des nuages. | It is cloudy. |
The question is Quelle heure est-il ? (What time is it?) You answer with Il est + a number + heures.
Remember the numbers: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, onze, douze.
In il fait chaud, il pleut and il est sept heures, the word il does not mean he. It means it, like English it is raining. For weather and time, it is ALWAYS il, never elle.
Put your hand on your throat. Say trois: your throat is quiet. Now say deux: your throat buzzes. [t] and [d] are made in the same place, but [d] uses your voice. Practise: trois / deux, temps / dix, tableau / demie.
Every morning this week, look out of the window and tell a friend the weather and the time in French: « Il est huit heures. Il fait beau. »
Tip
Weather and time wear the same hat: il. Il fait, il pleut, il y a, il est … heures. If you are talking about the sky or the clock, start with il.
The clock shows 10:00. Quelle heure est-il ?
