Lesson 4 of 5
35 min
It is Saturday. Umutoni is going to her cousin's wedding, and her brother Byiringiro is going to play football. They both need the right clothes!
Today you will name your clothes in French and say what colour they are.
Umutoni : « Aujourd'hui, je porte une robe jaune et des chaussures noires. »
Byiringiro : « Moi, je porte un short vert, un tee-shirt blanc et des chaussettes blanches. »
Maman : « Il fait froid ce soir. Prenez un pull ! »
Umutoni : « Oui, maman. Je prends mon pull rouge. »
Je porte means I am wearing. Aujourd'hui means today.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| une robe | a dress |
| une jupe | a skirt |
| une chemise | a shirt |
| un tee-shirt | a T-shirt |
| un pantalon | trousers |
| un short | shorts |
| un pull | a jumper |
| des chaussures | shoes |
| des chaussettes | socks |
| un uniforme | a school uniform |
Colours: rouge (red), bleu (blue), vert (green), jaune (yellow), noir (black), blanc (white).
A describing word like a colour follows three rules in French:
The describing word always copies the NOUN it describes, not the person who is speaking.
Le, je and the first part of chemise have a soft, short "uh" sound: [ə]. Les, et and porter end with a bright "ay" sound: [e]. This matters! In le pull and les pulls, the -s is silent, so the only way to HEAR that there is more than one is the sound of le or les.
Describe what you are wearing today in two sentences. For example: « Je porte une chemise bleue et un short kaki. Je porte des chaussures noires. »
Tip
The colour follows the noun, like a little brother. It walks behind it, and it dresses the same way: if the noun is feminine, the colour puts on an -e; if the noun is plural, the colour puts on an -s.
Say in French: a blue skirt.
Answer: une jupe bleue (jupe is feminine, so bleu takes -e).
Correct the mistake: une chemise vert.
Answer: une chemise verte.
Write: I am wearing a white shirt.
Answer: Je porte une chemise blanche.
You hear the bright [e] sound. Is it le pull or les pulls?
Answer: les pulls (more than one).
Why is it un pantalon rouge and also une robe rouge?
Answer: rouge already ends in -e, so it does not change.
