S’orienter et orienter quelqu’un
Lesson 1 of 4
35 min
Umutoni walks to school every morning. She knows the way so well that she could walk it with her eyes closed. But could she explain it to a visitor, in French?
Today you will learn the words that point the way: left, right and straight on.
Je sors de la maison. Je vais tout droit dans ma rue. Au carrefour, je tourne à gauche. Je passe devant la boutique. Je traverse la route au passage piéton. L'école est à droite, en face de l'église.
Je sors = I go out. Je passe devant = I go past. Je traverse = I cross.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| à gauche | (on the) left |
| à droite | (on the) right |
| tout droit | straight on |
| le carrefour | the crossroads |
| le rond-point | the roundabout |
| le coin | the corner |
| la route | the road |
| le passage piéton | the zebra crossing |
| en face de | opposite |
| traverser | to cross |
Careful: droite (right) and droit in tout droit (straight on) look alike. Tout droit means you do NOT turn at all.
To give an instruction, use the verb without tu or vous, like the teacher's consignes in Unit 1.
| To a friend (tu) | To an adult or a group (vous) | English |
|---|---|---|
| Tourne à gauche ! | Tournez à gauche ! | Turn left! |
| Va tout droit ! | Allez tout droit ! | Go straight on! |
| Traverse la route ! | Traversez la route ! | Cross the road! |
The vous form ends in -ez. It is the polite one, so use it with a teacher, a parent or a visitor.
Play Simon Says in French. The leader says « Jacques a dit : tournez à gauche ! » and everyone turns left. If the leader does NOT say « Jacques a dit », do not move! Try: « Levez la main droite ! », « Allez tout droit ! », « Tournez à droite ! »
Tip
dRoite and Right both have an R. So when you hear droite, think right. Gauche is the other one: left. And tout droit has no -e: it goes straight, without turning.
What does « Tournez à droite » mean?
Answer: Turn right.
Tell your friend: Go straight on!
Answer: « Va tout droit ! »
Tell your teacher: Cross the road.
Answer: « Traversez la route. » (vous, because she is an adult)
What is le rond-point?
Answer: the roundabout.
In Umutoni's text, what is opposite the school?
Answer: the church (l'église).
