S’orienter et orienter quelqu’un
Lesson 2 of 4
35 min
Some children walk for a long time to reach school; some live just next door. Every morning, thousands of Rwandan pupils are on the move!
To talk about moving, you need three verbs: aller (to go), marcher (to walk) and tourner (to turn).
À pied = on foot. Vite = fast. Comment ? = how?
Aller ends in -er, but it does NOT follow the -er pattern. It is irregular, so learn it by heart:
| French | English |
|---|---|
| je vais | I go, I am going |
| tu vas | you go (one friend) |
| il / elle va | he / she goes |
| nous allons | we go |
| vous allez | you go (polite, or a group) |
| ils / elles vont | they go |
Marcher and tourner are normal -er verbs: je marche, tu marches, il marche, nous marchons; je tourne, tu tournes, elle tourne, nous tournons.
After aller, use à for the place: je vais à l'école, je vais à la maison. But à + le always joins up to make au: je vais au marché, never à le marché.
Answer the question « Tu vas à l'école comment ? » in two sentences: « Je vais à l'école à pied. Je marche avec … » Then ask a friend and tell the class about them: « Il va à l'école … »
Tip
Sing the aller song: vais, vas, va, allons, allez, vont. Three short ones that start with v, two long ones that start with all, and vont to finish. Sing it to any tune you like until it sticks.
Complete: Nous ___ à l'école à pied. (aller)
