S’orienter et orienter quelqu’un
Lesson 3 of 4
35 min
Niyonzima is walking home from school in Huye when a lady stops him. She is visiting her sister, and she cannot find the health centre.
Listen to how she asks the way politely, and how Niyonzima helps her.
La dame : « Merci beaucoup ! »
Niyonzima : « De rien, madame. Au revoir ! »
| French | English |
|---|---|
| Excusez-moi. | Excuse me. |
| Où est …, s'il vous plaît ? | Where is …, please? |
| Pour aller à la gare routière ? | How do I get to the bus station? |
| C'est loin. | It is far. |

Put Est-ce que in front of any sentence and it becomes a yes/no question:
Say it with your voice going UP at the end, like every question. Que becomes qu' before a vowel.
Work with a partner. A is a visitor, B lives in the neighbourhood. A asks the way to a place (the market, the church, the pharmacy). B gives two instructions and says if it is far or near. A says thank you, and B answers « De rien ! » Then swap.
Tip
The polite sandwich. Start with Excusez-moi, put your question in the middle, and finish with s'il vous plaît. When someone helps you, close with Merci beaucoup. A polite question always gets a kind answer.
Ask a stranger politely where the market is.
Answer: « Excusez-moi, où est le marché, s'il vous plaît ? »
Turn this into a question with est-ce que: C'est près.
Answer: Est-ce que c'est près ?
