Lesson 4 of 5
35 min
It is Friday afternoon and the last bell is about to ring. Everybody is talking about the weekend. Tomorrow is the last Saturday of the month: the day of umuganda, when neighbours work together to keep the village clean.
To talk about what you are going to do, French has a very easy tense: the futur proche.
Keza : « Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire demain, Mugisha ? »
Mugisha : « Demain matin, mes parents vont participer à l'umuganda. Ils vont nettoyer le chemin du village. Moi, je vais garder ma petite sœur. »
Keza : « Et l'après-midi ? »
Keza : « Oh non ! Alors ce soir, je vais réviser. »
| French | English |
|---|---|
| demain | tomorrow |
| après-demain | the day after tomorrow |
| ce soir | this evening, tonight |
| ce week-end | this weekend |
| la semaine prochaine | next week |
| l'année prochaine | next year |
| garder | to look after |
| rendre visite à | to visit (a person) |
| nettoyer | to clean |
| réviser | to revise, to study again |
| un contrôle | a test |
To say what you are going to do, use the verb aller in the present + a verb in the infinitive. It works just like English I am going to play.
| aller | + infinitive | English |
|---|---|---|
| je vais | jouer | I am going to play |
| tu vas | réviser | you are going to revise |
| il, elle, on va | partir | he, she is going to leave |
| nous allons | rendre visite | we are going to visit |
| vous allez | prendre le bus | you are going to take the bus |
| ils, elles vont | nettoyer | they are going to clean |
Only aller changes. The second verb stays in the infinitive (-er, -ir, -re). To say NO, put ne … pas around aller: Je ne vais pas jouer. Nous n'allons pas partir.
The letters in, ain, ein and im all make ONE sound that goes through your nose: demain, matin, cousin, vingt, pain, plein, important. Test it: pinch your nose while you say demain. You will feel it buzz!
Write five sentences about your plans for next weekend with the futur proche: one for Saturday morning, one for Saturday afternoon, one for Sunday, one for Sunday evening and one thing you are NOT going to do. Then ask a partner: « Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire ce week-end ? »
Tip
Aller carries you into the future. Think of aller as a bus: it changes for each passenger (je vais, nous allons, ils vont), but the verb riding on it stays asleep in the infinitive: je vais jouer, nous allons partir.
Complete: Demain, je ___ jouer au football.
Answer: vais.
Complete: Mes parents ___ nettoyer le chemin.
Answer: vont.
Say in French: We are going to visit my aunt.
Answer: Nous allons rendre visite à ma tante.
Make it negative: Je vais regarder la télévision.
Answer: Je ne vais pas regarder la télévision.
What is Keza going to do this evening?
Answer: Elle va réviser (for the French test).
