Lesson 2 of 5
40 min
Every morning, before the first lesson, the class monitor writes the date on the board in French. Today it is Byiringiro's turn. He picks up the chalk and thinks: « Quel jour sommes-nous ? »
In this lesson you will revise the days, the months, the seasons of Rwanda and the weather.
Mugisha : « Moi, maître ! Mon anniversaire, c'est le 28 septembre. »
Maître Gatete : « Alors, bon anniversaire à l'avance, Mugisha ! »
À l'avance means in advance. Peut-être means maybe.
Les jours : lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche.
Les mois : janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre.
Two things to notice. First, in French, days and months are written with a small letter: lundi 14 septembre, not Lundi 14 Septembre. Second, to say the date, put le before the number: le 14 septembre, le 28 septembre. Only the first day of the month is special: le premier mai (written le 1er mai).
| Months | Season | English |
|---|---|---|
| de septembre à novembre | la petite saison des pluies | the short rainy season |
| de décembre à février | la petite saison sèche | the short dry season |
| de mars à mai | la grande saison des pluies | the long rainy season |
| de juin à août | la grande saison sèche | the long dry season |
To talk about the weather, French always starts with il. Here il does not mean he; it means it, like in English it is raining. There are three patterns:
| Pattern | Examples | English |
|---|---|---|
| il fait + describing word | il fait beau, il fait chaud, il fait froid, il fait sec | it is nice, hot, cold, dry |
| il y a + du, de la, des + noun | il y a du soleil, il y a du vent, il y a des nuages, il y a de l'orage | it is sunny, windy, cloudy, stormy |
| a weather verb on its own | il pleut, il tonne | it is raining, it is thundering |
Never say il fait pleut or elle pleut. The verb pleuvoir (to rain) only ever has one form in the present: il pleut.
One letter s between two vowels sounds like [z]: la saison, douze, seize, rose. Two letters ss sound like [s]: aussi, la classe. Be careful: un poisson [s] is a fish, but un poison [z] is poison!
Keep a weather diary for one week. Every day, write the date and the weather in French. For example: Mardi 15 septembre : il fait beau le matin. L'après-midi, il pleut et il tonne.
Tip
Il is the boss of the sky. Il fait, il y a, il pleut: whenever you talk about the weather, the sentence starts with il. And the calendar is shy: days and months never wear a capital letter.
Write the date 3 March in French.
Answer: le 3 mars (le trois mars).
Which month comes after octobre?
Answer: novembre.
Find the mistake: Il fait pleut.
Answer: Il pleut. Pleuvoir is a verb on its own, so it does not need fait.
Say in French: It is windy and it is cold.
Answer: Il y a du vent et il fait froid.
In July, is it the rainy season or the dry season in Rwanda?
Answer: the dry season: la grande saison sèche.
