Lesson 5 of 5
45 min
After the holidays, everybody has a story to tell: a trip to the village, a visit to a grandmother, a wedding, a football match. To tell what happened, French uses the passé composé.
Odongo and Apiyo live in town with their father. In the holidays they go to visit their grandmother in a fishing village near a big lake. You may know this story from your English lessons: here it is in French.
You can read the whole story with pictures and listen to it read aloud in French on Storybooks Rwanda.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| la veille | the day before |
| le lendemain | the next day |
| faire sa valise | to pack your bag |
| ils ne pouvaient pas dormir | they could not sleep |
| s'endormir | to fall asleep |
| poursuivre | to chase |
| grimper aux arbres | to climb trees |
| s'éclabousser | to splash each other |
| souper | to have dinner (the word used in Canada) |
| les tâches ménagères | housework |
| le bois de chauffage | firewood |
| ramasser, cueillir | to collect, to pick |
| raconter | to tell (a story) |
The passé composé tells what happened, one finished action after another. It has TWO parts: avoir or être in the present + a past participle.
| Infinitive | Past participle | Example from the story |
|---|---|---|
| chanter, compter, grimper | chanté, compté, grimpé | ils ont chanté des chansons |
| faire | fait | ils ont fait leurs valises |
| voir | vu | ils ont vu des montagnes |
| boire | bu | j'ai bu du thé |
| cueillir | cueilli | ils ont cueilli des herbes |
Most verbs use avoir: j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont + participle. All -er verbs make their participle with -é.
A small group of verbs of movement use être: aller, partir, sortir, arriver, rentrer, retourner, venir, tomber. Verbs with a mirror use être too: ils se sont endormis. With être, the participle copies the subject like a describing word: il est parti, elle est partie, ils sont partis, elles sont parties.
When a word ends in a silent s and the next word starts with a vowel, the s wakes up and sounds like [z]. This is called la liaison. Listen to the difference:
Only the liaison tells your ear which one it is! More liaisons: nous‿avons, vous‿avez, les‿enfants, des‿oiseaux.
Your partner asks you: « Qu'est-ce que tu as fait hier ? » Answer in six sentences with d'abord, puis, ensuite, enfin. For example: D'abord, je me suis réveillé à six heures. Puis j'ai pris mon petit déjeuner. Ensuite, je suis allé à l'école. L'après-midi, j'ai joué au football. Le soir, j'ai fait mes devoirs. Enfin, je me suis couché à neuf heures. A girl writes je me suis réveillée, je suis allée.
Tip
Does your body travel? Use être. Remember this picture: verbs where your whole body MOVES from one place to another (aller, partir, sortir, arriver, rentrer, venir, tomber) take être. Almost everything else takes avoir.
What did the children do the day before the journey?
Answer: Ils ont fait leurs valises (they packed their bags).
Give the past participle of voir.
Answer: vu.
Avoir or être? Ils ___ partis tôt le matin.
Answer: sont (partir is a verb of movement).
Say in French: I helped my grandmother.
Answer: J'ai aidé ma grand-mère.
You hear [il‿zɔ̃]. Is it ils ont or ils sont?
Answer: ils ont (the liaison makes the [z]).
