Fêtes et anniversaires
Lesson 4 of 4
40 min
It is the last French lesson of the unit, and Madame Uwase has a surprise: a game! One pupil mimes an action from a celebration without speaking, and the team must guess it in French.
First, read the rules of the game. Notice how the rules give orders.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| une équipe | a team |
| tirer une carte | to pick a card |
| mimer | to mime, to act without words |
| faire semblant de | to pretend to |
| couper | to cut |
| un couteau | a knife |
| décorer | to decorate |
| applaudir | to clap |
| une règle | a rule (and also a ruler!) |
To give an order or an instruction, use the imperative. Take the present tense of tu, nous or vous, and simply drop the pronoun:
| Present | Imperative | English |
|---|---|---|
| vous formez | Formez des équipes ! | Form teams! (to several people, or politely) |
| nous jouons | Jouons ! | Let's play! |
| tu prends | Prends une carte ! | Take a card! (to one friend) |
| tu fais | Fais un vœu ! | Make a wish! |
| tu souffles | Souffle les bougies ! | Blow out the candles! |
| tu ouvres | Ouvre ton cadeau ! | Open your present! |
Watch out: with tu, verbs whose present ends in -es (all the -er verbs, and ouvrir) lose their -s: tu souffles → Souffle !, tu ouvres → Ouvre ! Other verbs keep it: tu prends → Prends !
To say DON'T, put ne … pas around the verb: Ne parle pas ! And ne … rien means nothing: Ne dis rien ! (Don't say anything!)
Make your own cards with celebration actions and play in teams of four. The team asks questions with Tu …?, and the mimer answers only oui or non. The winner is the team with the most points.
Tell the story of the best celebration of your life in six sentences, in the passé composé. Answer these questions: Quand ? Où ? Avec qui ? Qu'est-ce que vous avez fait ? Qu'est-ce que vous avez mangé ? Finish with a sentence about how you felt: J'étais très content or J'étais très contente (I was very happy).
Tip
The imperative drops its hat. An order has no tu or vous in front: it goes straight to the action. And -er verbs drop their -s too: tu danses → Danse !
Tell your friend to open the present.
Answer: Ouvre le cadeau !
Tell the whole class to clap.
Answer: Applaudissez !
Correct the mistake: Danses avec nous !
Answer: Danse avec nous ! (-er verbs drop the -s with tu).
Say in French: Let's decorate the house!
Answer: Décorons la maison !
In the game, what may the mimer say?
Answer: only « oui » or « non ».
