Fêtes et anniversaires
Lesson 2 of 4
45 min
In Rwanda, families celebrate many happy days together: weddings, births, Christmas, Eid, the New Year, birthdays… Each celebration has its food, its music and its special greetings.
Mugisha wrote a text about the celebrations in his family. Read it and find out what his family does, and what his best friend's family does.
C'était means it was, il y avait means there were, and portait means was wearing. Le mien means mine.
| French | English |
|---|---|
| une fête | a celebration, a party |
| faire la fête | to party, to celebrate |
| Noël | Christmas |
| le Nouvel An | New Year |
| l'Aïd el-Fitr | Eid al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan |
| l'église, la mosquée | the church, the mosque |
| un mariage, se marier | a wedding, to get married |
| un repas | a meal |
| souhaiter | to wish |
| We say… | …for |
|---|---|
| Joyeux Noël ! | Christmas |
| Bonne année ! | the New Year |
| Aïd Moubarak ! | Eid |
| Joyeux anniversaire ! | a birthday |
| Félicitations ! | a wedding, a birth, a success |
| Bonne fête ! | any celebration |
A describing word (an adjective) copies the noun: masculine with a masculine noun, feminine with a feminine noun. Here are the main patterns:
| Pattern | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| add -e | un grand repas, un invité élégant, un umushanana vert | une grande fête, une invitée élégante, une robe verte |
| ends in -e: no change | un gâteau magnifique | une coiffure magnifique |
| -eux becomes -euse | un repas délicieux, un jour joyeux | une soupe délicieuse, une journée joyeuse |
| -on becomes -onne | un bon anniversaire | une bonne année |
| special words | beau, nouveau, blanc, gentil | belle, nouvelle, blanche, gentille |
Now you understand the greetings: Bon anniversaire (un anniversaire is masculine) but Bonne année and Bonne fête (une année, une fête are feminine). Both words start with a vowel, so only the gender decides!
Very often, the feminine -e makes you hear the last consonant: grand [grɑ̃] → grande [grɑ̃d], vert [vɛr] → verte [vɛrt], bon [bɔ̃] → bonne [bɔn]. Say each pair out loud.
Tell a partner about a celebration in your family. Use at least three describing words: une grande fête, un repas délicieux, une belle robe. Your partner asks: « C'est quand ? Qu'est-ce que vous faites ? »
Tip
Adjectives are copycats. They look at their noun and dress the same: a feminine noun, a feminine adjective. And watch the greetings: joyeux Noël, bonne année. The noun decides.
