Les réseaux sociaux
Lesson 4 of 4
30 min
Say these two social-media words out loud: un groupe and un message. The same letter g makes two different sounds!
In groupe, g is hard, like in the English word 'go'. We write this sound [g]. In message, g is soft, like the s in the English word 'pleasure'. We write this sound [ʒ]. Today you will learn when g is hard and when it is soft.
Gatete : Jeanne, tu utilises Internet ?
Allez, on joue ensemble ? Nous partageons la tablette !
Read the dialogue aloud with a partner. Every time you say a hard [g], tap the table. Every time you say a soft [ʒ], touch your ear!
| Sound | How to write it | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| [g] hard, as in 'go' | g + a, o, u | un garçon, une gomme, un gorille, un légume |
| g + a consonant (l, r) | un groupe, grand, une glace | |
| gu + e, i | une guitare, un guide, la langue | |
| [ʒ] soft, as in 'pleasure' | j (always) | un jeu, jouer, jeune, bonjour |
This is a spelling rule you already use without knowing it:
Say it three times, faster and faster:
Then interview a partner with the questions from the dialogue: « Tu utilises Internet ? Où ? Pour faire quoi ? Tu as un groupe de classe ? »
Tip
A, O, U make G tough. (gare, gorille, légume). E, I, Y make G soft. (page, girafe, gymnastique). Want a soft g before a or o? Add e: nous partageons. Want a hard g before e or i? Add u: guitare. And j is always soft: jeu, jouer, jeune.
