Imagine you write a letter today, put it in an envelope and open it in 2040. You will be about 26 years old! What will you do? Where will you live?
Mutesi wrote a letter like that. To talk about a future that is further away, she uses the futur simple: je serai, tu auras, tu travailleras…

Chère Mutesi de 2040,
Aujourd'hui, j'ai douze ans et je suis en P6. Toi, tu auras vingt-six ans !
Est-ce que tu seras médecin, comme dans mon rêve ? Je pense que tu travailleras dans un hôpital à Huye, et que tu soigneras les enfants.
Tu habiteras peut-être dans une petite maison avec un jardin plein de fleurs. Tu auras un chien, bien sûr !
Le week-end, tu joueras toujours au volley-ball avec tes amies, et tu iras voir papa et maman à Rwamagana.
Un jour, tu feras un grand voyage : tu verras la mer pour la première fois !
Et le Rwanda ? Il y aura encore plus d'arbres sur les collines, et les enfants apprendront avec des tablettes.

Je t'embrasse is a friendly way to end a letter, like 'Love' or 'Hugs'. La mer means 'the sea'.
Step 1: regular verbs. Take the whole infinitive and add the endings -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. For verbs ending in -re, first drop the final e (apprendre → apprendr- → j'apprendrai).

Step 2: special verbs. Some very common verbs have a special stem, but they keep the same endings:

Step 3: futur proche or futur simple? Use aller + infinitive for a plan that is near and sure: « Demain, je vais partir à Huye. » Use the futur simple for a future that is further away, or less sure: « Un jour, je partirai en voyage. »
After quand, when you talk about the future, French uses the futur simple: « Quand je serai grande, je serai médecin. » (English says 'When I grow up'.)
Write a letter to yourself in 2040, in six sentences. Use at least four verbs in the futur simple, including two special verbs (serai, aurai, irai, ferai, verrai…). Start with the place and the date, « Cher » or « Chère », and end with « Je t'embrasse ».
Tip
The endings are avoir in disguise. Listen: j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. The future endings are almost the same: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. Then learn the special stems like a song: ser, aur, ir, fer, viendr, pourr, voudr, verr, devr!

Answer: vingt-six ans (26).
