Things in Our Classroom
Lesson 3 of 5
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Stop at each colour and find that colour in the room.
Mutesi looks around her class. She can see many colours.
Her pen is blue. The chalk is white. The blackboard is black.
Today you will name six colours and put the colour word in the right place.
Look at the flag of Rwanda. You can see blue (ubururu), yellow (umuhondo) and green (icyatsi) on it.
The chalk in your class is white (umweru).
The blackboard is black (umukara).
Many school bags are red (umutuku).
Say all six out loud: red, blue, yellow, green, black, white.
In English the colour word comes before the thing.
Say it as one frame: a + colour + thing.
Say: a yellow ruler. a blue pen. a green book.
Careful! Do not say a ruler yellow. That is the Kinyarwanda order. In English the colour comes first.
Worked example
Keza holds a ruler. The ruler is yellow.
Step 1 Start with This is.
Step 2 Put in the little word a.
Step 3 Put the colour, then the thing: yellow ruler.
She says: This is a yellow ruler.
Two white books are near her. She says: These are white books.
Now use your own eyes: I can see a green book. I can see a black bag.

A song about colours. Sing the colour you can see.
Tip
Colour first, thing after
Chant it five times: a red bag, a blue pen, a yellow ruler, a green book, a black chair.
If you hear yourself say a bag red, you put them the Kinyarwanda way. Turn the two words around.
