Telling Stories
Lesson 1 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Read the little story two times, slowly.
Keza sits on a mat with her grandmother.
At night her grandmother tells her a story.
Keza listens. She can see the story in her head.
Today you will find the three parts of a story.
Every story has a name.
That name is the title.
Here is a story for you. The title is The Egg Under the Hat.
Listen. This story has three parts.
The beginning. Once upon a time, a hen lives in Keza's garden.
The middle. The hen has one egg. Keza cannot see the egg! The egg is under a hat.
The end. Mugisha can see the hat. Now Keza has her egg.
Say the three parts with me: beginning, middle, end.
The beginning tells you who is in the story.
The middle is where something is not good.
The end is where it is good again.
Careful! The end is not the last thing you hear.
Ask yourself: what changed?
In the middle, Keza cannot see her egg. At the end, she has her egg. That changed. So that is the end.
Now say the story back to a big person, in three parts.
Do not say every word. Say the beginning. Say the middle. Say the end.

A very short story about a cat. Listen for the beginning, the middle and the end.
Tip
Three parts, three fingers
Put up one finger and say beginning. Two fingers: middle. Three fingers: end.
Then ask: what changed? The part where it is good again is the end.
Say each one out loud, then tap Show answer to check.
