Lesson 1 of 5
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Let your child say each English word after you.
Uwase is at the door of her house.
Her mother is in the house. Her father is in the garden.
"Hello! I am home," says Uwase.
Today you will say where you live.
Look at the place where your bed is.
That place is your house.
Your house is your home.
Say it out loud: house. Now say: home.
Here are your new words:
I live in ...
Now put the name of your place at the end.
I live in Kigali.
I live in Musanze.
Keza says: I live in Nyamata.
Careful! "Nyamata" on its own is not the whole thing. Say I live in first, then your place.
At home your family does things.
Your mother waters the garden.
Your father is at the door of the house.
You sweep the house in the morning.
Your brother and your sister sweep too.
Say these out loud:
I sweep the house.
My mother waters the garden.
Say home very slowly.
The very first little sound is /h/.
Now say garden very slowly. The first sound is /g/.

A song about your family at home. Listen for mother, father, sister and brother.
Tip
I live in ... comes first
Say "I live in ..." every time.
Then say the name of the place where your house is.
A name on its own is not the whole thing.
