Things in Our Classroom
Lesson 1 of 5
10 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read every English word out loud, slowly. Let the child say it after you.
Uwase comes into her class in the morning. She sits down and looks around.
She can see many things. She does not know their English names yet.
Today you will name seven things in your class in English.
In English you say a desk. You do not say just desk.
The word a is very small. It still has to be there.
Say each one as one lump: a desk, a book, a pencil.
a desk (idesiki) — you sit at it.
a chair (intebe) — you sit down on it.
a window (idirishya) — you can see out of it.
a book (igitabo) — you can see words in it.
a pencil (ikaramu) — you hold it in your hand.
a blackboard (ikibaho) — the teacher uses white chalk (ingwa) on it.
a cupboard (akabati) — the books stay in it.
Worked example
Mugisha holds a pencil in his hand.
Keza asks him: What is this?
Mugisha answers: This is a pencil.
Careful! Do not say This is pencil. The word a must stay in.
Say this out loud: This is a book.
Clap one time for each word: This, is, a, book.
That is 4 words. Clap them again and count.

A song about your class. Listen and point to the things you can see.
Tip
One thing, one little 'a'
Never say the name on its own. Say a desk, a book, a pencil.
