Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Put one pencil, then three pencils, into the child's hand.

Then he picks up two more. Now he holds three pencils.
Today you will learn what changes when there is more than one.
Read these two sentences out loud.

These are my blue books.
Three things changed at the same time.
Step 1 This became These.
Step 2 is became are.
Step 3 book became books. It got an s on the end.
This is a pen. It becomes: These are pens.
This is a red bag. It becomes: These are red bags.
That is a ruler. It becomes: Those are rulers.
Say each pair out loud. Hear the small s at the end.
Do not say These is my books.
If you say these, you must say are.
One thing goes with is. Many things go with are.
