Where Things Are, and How Many
Lesson 7 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: this lesson is about sound, so it only works out loud. Say every word slowly, then fast, and let the child say it after you.
A cat sits under Keza's chair. A hat is on the table. A bag is on the chair.
Say those three words out loud: cat, hat, bag.
One small sound hides inside all three. Today you will hear it.
In the lesson before this one you learned the name of the letter: ay.
Today you learn its sound. It is short and open: a, a, a.
Open your mouth a little and let it out fast. Not ay. Just a.
Listen to two pieces: c and at.
Now slide them together with no gap.
c - at, c-at, cat.
Put two fingers far apart on the table. Say c, then at. Now slide your fingers together and say it fast. The word pops out.
h and at make hat.
m and an make man.
b and ag make bag.
Say each one slow, then fast: b - ag, b-ag, bag.
Careful! Do not stop in the middle. c, then a long wait, then at, is not a word. Go faster until the two pieces touch.
Listen to these words. Put your hands up when you hear the short a sound.
cat. Hands up.
book. Hands down.
bag. Hands up.
shoes. Hands down.
man. Hands up.

Three little letters make a word with a.
