Lesson 4 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Then ask the child about what is really on your own table.
Mugisha is at home. His mother is at the table.
She asks him: Is there a cup on the table?
Mugisha wants to say more than one small word. Today you will learn how.
One thing: Is there a cup on the table?
Two or more: Are there four books on the desk?
Do not stop at yes. Do not stop at no. Say the tail too.
Yes, there is.
No, there is not.
For two or more things, the tail changes:
Yes, there are.
No, there are not.
Your friend asks: Is there a green ball on the table?
You look. You see a blue cup.
You say: No, there is not. There is a blue cup.
Now your friend knows two things. That is good English.
Are there three books in your bag?
You look in your bag. You count one book.
You say: No, there are not. There is one book.
Careful! A bare no tells your friend nothing. Always add the tail.
Say these two out loud, one after the other: Yes, there is. No, there is not.
One clap: yes, no, there, ball.
Two claps: un-der, be-hind, ta-ble.

Is it? Yes, it is. No, it is not.
Tip
Never stop at yes
Every yes and every no has a tail: there is or there are.
One thing, one tail: there is. Two or more, the other tail: there are.
Answer out loud with the tail, then tap Show answer to check.
