Numbers 1 to 5
Lesson 7 of 8
12 min
Let's begin
Gatete picks 3 avocados behind the house. His sister brings him 2 more.
Now he has two little heaps on the ground. He wants one number for all of them.
Today you will put groups together.
The + sign says: put these groups together.
The = sign says: is the same as.
Worked example
3 + 2.
Step 1 Put 3 beans on the mat.
Step 2 Put 2 more beans beside them.
Step 3 Push them all together and count: one, two, three, four, five.
3 + 2 = 5
It is read: three plus two is the same as five. Say it out loud!
So Gatete has 5 avocados.
The = sign does not mean “write the answer here”.
It means both sides are the same.
So you may also write it the other way round:
5 = 3 + 2
Both sentences are true. 3 beans and 2 beans are 5 beans.
Put out 2 stones. Then put out 3 stones. Push them together and count: 5.
2 + 3 = 5
Look! 3 + 2 and 2 + 3 both make 5. The order does not matter.
Say these every day. Soon you will just know them.
Ishimwe carries 2 bananas. His mama gives him 2 more bananas.
Put the two groups together and count: one, two, three, four.
2 + 2 = 4
So Ishimwe carries 4 bananas.
Careful! Do not forget the first group. Count every single banana.
Tip
Equals means the same as
Think of your two hands holding the same weight.
If one side is 5, the other side must be 5 too.
Sing the pairs that make 5: 1 and 4, 2 and 3
Use beans for each one. Then tap Show answer to check.
