Let's begin
Ishimwe counts the eggs in the basket. There are 4 eggs today.
His father is far away in the field. Ishimwe wants to leave him the number.
Today you will write the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Look at the table. Say the number as you write it.
| Number | How you make it | How many |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One straight line down. | one bean |
| 2 | A small curve, then a line along the bottom. | two beans |
| 3 | A curve, then one more curve under it. | three beans |
| 4 | Down, then across, then a line down through. | four beans |
| 5 | A hat on top, then down the back, then a round tummy. | five beans |
Trace each one in sand or dust with your finger. Then write it in your book.
Worked example
Ishimwe's eggs.
Step 1 Touch each egg and count: one, two, three, four.
Step 2 The last number is four.
Step 3 Write the number 4.
Someone shows you a card with 3 on it.
Put out stones, one by one, until you reach 3.
Count them again to check: one, two, three. The card says 3. You have 3 stones. Good.
Careful! A number is not just a shape to copy. It tells how many things you have.
Always check. Count your stones. Do they match your number?
Tip
