Rwandan Money, 1 Frw to 100 Frw
Lesson 1 of 4
12 min
Let's begin
Gatete shakes an old tin at home. Coins fall onto the mat.
Some coins are wide. Some coins are small.
“Which one buys the most?” he asks his mama.
Today you will read any coin and say what it is worth.
Every coin has a number on its face.
That number tells you the value.
A coin with 10 on it is worth 10 Frw.
Frw is short for Rwandan francs. We write it after the number.
These are the coins you will use:
| The coin says | It is worth |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 Frw |
| 5 | 5 Frw |
| 10 | 10 Frw |
| 20 | 20 Frw |
| 50 | 50 Frw |
| 100 | 100 Frw |
There is a 2 Frw coin too. You will not see it often.
Point at each row. Say the value out loud.
Put a coin under thin paper at home.
Rub a pencil over it. The number comes up.
Gatete picks the widest coin. He says it must buy the most.
Careful! That is not always true.
Do not guess from the size. Do not guess from the colour.
Read the number. The number is the boss.
Worked example
Mutesi holds two coins.
Step 1 The first coin says 10. It is worth 10 Frw.
Step 2 The second coin says 50. It is worth 50 Frw.
Step 3 50 is more than 10.
So the coin that says 50 is worth more.
It does not matter which coin is wider.
Tip
Read the number, not the size
Hold a coin. Turn it over. Find the number.
Then say it out loud: “This is a 20 Frw coin.”
A wide coin can still be worth very little.
