Lesson 2 of 4
13 min
Let's begin
Gatete and Keza empty their pockets at break time.
Gatete has 3 coins. Keza has only 1 coin.
“I am rich today!” says Gatete.
Today you will find who really has more money.
Each of Gatete's coins says 20.
Count the francs with him: 20, 40, 60.
Gatete has 60 Frw.
Keza's one coin says 100. Keza has 100 Frw.
100 is more than 60.
So Keza has more money, with one coin.
Careful! 3 coins can be less money than 1 coin.
Here is another pair of friends.
Mutesi has one 50 Frw coin.
Habimana has five 10 Frw coins.
Count Habimana's francs: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.
They both have 50 Frw. It is the same money.
Habimana holds 5 coins. Mutesi holds 1 coin.
The pile of coins does not decide. The francs decide.
Lay your coins in a row. Put the biggest value first.
Then count on, coin by coin.
Worked example
50 Frw, 10 Frw, 10 Frw and 5 Frw.
Step 1 Start on the biggest: 50.
Step 2 Count on ten: 60.
Step 3 Count on ten again: 70.
Step 4 Count on five: 75.
The coins are worth 75 Frw.
Now count a market basket with me.
Niyonzima holds 20 Frw, 20 Frw and 10 Frw.
Start on 20. Count on twenty: 40.
Count on ten: 50.
Niyonzima has 50 Frw.
No coins at home? Use bottle caps.
Write a value on each cap. Then count the francs.
Tip
Count the money, not the coins
Touch each coin. Say its francs out loud.
Start big, then count on.
A fist of small coins can still be little money.
Watch: start on the biggest coin, then count on.
