Rwandan Money, 1 Frw to 100 Frw
Lesson 4 of 4
13 min
Let's begin
Umutoni walks to the small shop by the school gate.
She holds one 100 Frw coin in her fist.
She wants a small banana and a sweet.
Today you will work out the change that comes back.
First look at the prices at the shop.
| What you buy | Price |
|---|---|
| One sweet | 20 Frw |
| A piece of sugar cane | 30 Frw |
| A small banana | 50 Frw |
Worked example
a small banana and a sweet.
Step 1 The banana is 50 Frw. Start on 50.
Step 2 Count on 20 for the sweet: 60, 70.
Step 3 Umutoni must pay 70 Frw.
Umutoni gives the seller her 100 Frw coin.
Her food costs 70 Frw.
Take the 70 away from the 100.
100 − 70 = 30
Her change is 30 Frw.
Now check it. Change must be smaller than the money you gave.
30 is smaller than 100. Good.
Careful! Do not add here. Adding makes the answer bigger.
Worked example
sugar cane for 30 Frw.
Step 1 Gatete pays with a 50 Frw coin.
Step 2 50 − 30 = 20
Step 3 His change is 20 Frw.
Count the coins the seller puts in your hand.
Count the francs, not the coins.
Do it before you walk away.
Too much came back? Give it back. That is honest.

Tip
Change is smaller than what you gave
Say the price. Say what you gave. Then take away.
Count the coins in your hand before you go.
Got a bigger number? You added by mistake.
Watch: add the prices first, then work out the change.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.

What you learned today
Two free storybooks in Kinyarwanda, from African Storybook. In Tomasi umucuruzi w'imineke, Tomasi carries bananas to the market, sells them all, and then counts the money he earned. In Mugabo ku isoko, a boy learns what happens when there is not enough money, and what the change can buy. Read one with someone at home, and count the money with them.
Quick check
Sugar cane costs 30 Frw. You pay 100 Frw. Your change?
