People at Home and at School
Lesson 1 of 5
10 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Stop at each family word and let the child say it after you.
Uwase is at home. It is evening.
She holds up her hand. She names the people who are with her.
Mother. Father. Her brother. Her grandmother.
Today you will name your family in English too.
Your family is the people you are with at home.
Say these six words out loud:
Say them again. Hold up one finger for one word.
Uwase points to her mother. She says:
This is my mother.
Now she points to one more person. Only the last word changes.
This is my father.
This is my brother.
This is my grandmother.
Three words stay the same every time: This is my. Put your family word at the end.
At home you have two words for a boy in your family.
One word is for the big boy. One word is for the small boy.
English is not like that. English has one word.
Gatete is ten years old. Ishimwe is six years old. They are boys in one family.
In English they are both brothers.
A girl in your family is your sister. One word again.
Careful! Do not look for two words. English has one.
Your mother has a mother too. She is your grandmother.
Your father has a father. He is your grandfather.
Listen to the words: grand-mother, grand-father. You can hear mother and father inside them.
Watch and say the words: mother, father, brother, sister.
