Lesson 5 of 5
10 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud and clap with the child. Say every word slowly.
Stop. Something changes today.
Before, you clapped one time for one word in a sentence.
Today you clap inside one word. One word can have two claps, or even three.
Say this word slowly: mo-ther.
Can you hear two parts? Clap with it. Clap on mo. Clap on ther.
That is 2 beats.
Now say: sis-ter. Clap with it. That is 2 beats too.
Now say: school. Clap. Only one clap. That is 1 beat.
Put your hand flat under your chin.
Say grand-mo-ther slowly. Your chin knocks your hand three times.
Your chin goes down one time for each beat. Your hand counts the beats for you.
Try it with your own name. How many times does your chin knock?
Say each word slowly. Clap it. Then look at the number.
| Word | Beats |
|---|---|
| head | 1 |
| school | 1 |
| cook | 1 |
| mo-ther | 2 |
| fa-ther | 2 |
| sis-ter | 2 |
| tea-cher | 2 |
| fa-mi-ly | 3 |
| grand-mo-ther | 3 |
The word head sits inside head teacher. On its own it has 1 beat.
Careful! Some children clap one time for teacher. Say it slowly: tea-cher. That is 2.
Family words in a song. Clap the beats you hear in each word.
