Lesson 2 of 5

Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Point at a real person in the room for each question.
Mugisha is with his family. It is evening.
His friend Keza points to one person and asks him: Who is this?
Mugisha wants to answer in English. Today you will answer too, and you will say the name.
Point to one person near you. Ask:
Who is this?
The answer is short too:
This is my father.
Now ask again. Point to one more person.
Who is this? This is my grandmother.
Ask. Answer. Ask. Answer. Do it with every person at home.
First say who the person is. Then say the name.
This is my father. His name is Gatete.
This is my mother. Her name is Mutesi.
You can ask for a name:
What is your father's name?
And the answer is:
His name is Gatete.
Before you say his or her, stop.
Ask yourself: is this person a he or a she?
If the answer is he, say his.
If the answer is she, say her.
Your father is a he. So you say his name.
Your grandmother is a she. So you say her name.
Careful! This is wrong: This is my mother. His name is Mutesi.
A mother is a she. Say: Her name is Mutesi.
A song about the people in a family. Listen for mother and father.
Tip
He goes with his. She goes with her
Say the two words together, like one word: he-his, she-her.
If you hear yourself say his for your mother, stop. Say it again with her.
Say each one out loud, then tap Show answer to check.
