Lesson 5 of 5
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud and say every sound slowly.
Mutesi claps the beats in a word: gar-den.
You did that before.
Today you do something new.
You catch only the very first little sound.
Say table very slowly.
The first beat is "ta". That is a beat, not a sound.
Cut it short. The very first sound is /t/.
Careful! "ta" is a beat. /t/ is a sound. Today you want the sound.
food starts with /f/.
dog starts with /d/.
bed starts with /b/.
mat starts with /m/.
jug starts with /j/.
lamp starts with /l/.
Say each word out loud. Then cut off the first little sound.
You know three letters now. Say each name, then say its sound.
a says /a/. You hear it in cat, hat and mat.
e says /e/. You hear it in bed, pen and red.
o says /o/. You hear it in dog, box and on.
The word arm starts with /a/. The word on starts with /o/.
Say the name of somebody in your house. Say it very slowly.
Catch the first sound. Then say the rest of the name.
Every letter and the sound it makes. Say each sound out loud.
