Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Your child needs a stick and some dust, or a pencil and a notebook.
Mutesi writes the letter n in the dust.
Her hand goes up and over one time too many.
Now it is an m!
Today you will meet three new letters: n, m and g.
This is the letter n. The big one is N.
This is the letter m. The big one is M.
This is the letter g. The big one is G.
Say the three names out loud: n, m, g.
Look at this row. Find every n and circle it.
| n | m | a | g | n | o | m | e | n | g |
There are three letter n in the row.
Now find every m. There are two. Now find every g. There are two.
n goes down, then up and over. That makes one hump.
m goes down, then up and over, then up and over again. That makes two humps.
g goes all the way round like o, then down with a long tail.
Careful! Count out loud while your hand moves. n has ONE hump. m has TWO humps.
Write n, m and g six times each in the dust.
Then write them in your notebook.
n says /n/. Point to your nose. Say nose very slowly. The first sound is /n/.
m says /m/. The moon comes out at night. Look up and you will see it. Say moon.
g says /g/. A goat eats grass. Say goat.

All the letter names in one short song. Listen for n, m and g.
