Lesson 6 of 6
13 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud and say every sound slowly. Your child needs three fingers and a table.
Byiringiro taps the table three times: /m/ ... /a/ ... /t/.
His brother says: "Now say them fast."
Byiringiro says mat. A word comes out!
Today you will meet y, t and z, and you will put sounds together into words.
This is the letter y. The big one is Y.
This is the letter t. The big one is T.
This is the letter z. The big one is Z.
Say the three names out loud: y, t, z.
Look at this row. Find every t and circle it.
| y | t | a | z | t | o | y | z | t | e |
There are three letter t in the row. There are two y and two z.
y has two short lines that meet, then a tail going down.
t is a long line going down, then one small line across it.
z goes across the top, then down, then across the bottom.
Careful! y has a tail under the line. t has no tail.
Write y, t and z six times each in the dust, then in your notebook.
y says /y/. A yam is something you eat. Say yam.
t says /t/. Your plate is on the table. Say table.
z says /z/. A zebra is an animal with black and white on its body. Say zebra.
Now put three sounds together into one word.
Tap three fingers on the table, one for each sound.
/m/ ... /a/ ... /t/
Say them again, faster. Slide the three fingers together.
You hear mat.
/m/ ... /a/ ... /n/ makes man.
/t/ ... /a/ ... /n/ makes tan.
Careful! Do not stop between the sounds. "muh ... a ... tuh" is not a word. Slide them together until you hear the word.
Three sounds go together and make a word. Say each word with them.
Make the word long and slow, then put the sounds together.
Tip
No gaps. Slide the sounds
Start slow: /m/ ... /a/ ... /t/.
Then say it faster and faster, with no stop.
When the gaps go, the word comes: mat.
Say each one out loud, then tap Show answer to check.
Say it together: /m/ + /a/ + /t/.
Answer: mat. You know the word mat from your home.
