Lesson 7 of 8
13 min
Let's begin
Ishimwe holds 6 groundnuts in his hand.
His aunt drops 3 more into his palm.
He wants to know how many he has now.
Today you will add numbers up to 9.
The sign + says: put these groups together.
The sign = says: is the same as.
6 + 3 = 9
This is read: six plus three equals nine. Say it out loud!
The two small groups become one bigger group.
Worked example
6 + 3.
Step 1 Hold 6 in your head.
Step 2 Do NOT say 6.
Step 3 Put up one finger for each new number: 7, 8, 9.
Step 4 You put up 3 fingers. You stopped on 9.
So Ishimwe has 9 groundnuts.
Careful! Some children say 8. They counted 6 as their first number.
The first word out of your mouth must be 7.
Worked example
2 + 7.
Counting on from 2 is slow. Turn it around.
Hold 7 in your head. Count on 2 more: 8, 9.
2 + 7 = 9 and 7 + 2 = 9.
You get the same answer either way. So start with the bigger one.
4 + 4 = 8. That is two rows of 4 caps.
3 + 3 = 6. Learn these two by heart.
Soon you will just know them. No counting at all.
Worked example
5 + 4.
Mutesi sells 5 eggs in the morning.
She sells 4 more eggs after lunch.
Step 1 Hold 5 in your head.
Step 2 Count on four: 6, 7, 8, 9.
Step 3 You stopped on 9.
Mutesi sold 9 eggs today.
Tip
Hold the big one. Count on the small one
Never say the number you are holding.
Start on the very next number.
One finger up for each number you say.
Hold the big number, then count on the small one
Count on with your fingers, then tap Show answer to check.
