Let's begin
Ishimwe draws a ten frame in the sand with a stick.
He puts a small stone in every box but one.
One box is still empty.
Today you will count 8 and 9.
Fill the top row of your ten frame. That is 5.
Now put 3 beans in the bottom row.

Hold 5 in your head. Count on: 6, 7, 8.
There are 8 beans.
Now make two rows of 4 bottle caps.

4 caps and 4 caps make 8.
The two rows are the same size. 8 is a double.
A ten frame has 10 boxes.
Put a bean in every box but one.

Hold 5 in your head. Count on: 6, 7, 8, 9.
There are 9 beans. 9 is 5 and 4 more.
One box is still empty. That empty box is how you know it is 9.
Loose stones in a pile are hard to count.
Put them in a line first. Then touch each one.
Careful! Many children say 8 or 10 for a pile of 9.
Count again slowly. One touch, one number.
Tip
One touch, one number
Line your stones up before you start.
Move each stone across as you say its number.
Then the count cannot run away from you.
