Lesson 4 of 8
12 min
Let's begin
Umutoni writes on her slate. She wants to write 9.
Her little ball goes at the bottom. She has written 6.
6 and 9 look alike, but they are not the same number.
Today you will write 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Read each row out loud. Touch every star as you count.
| Numeral | Name | Count them |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | six | * * * * * * |
| 7 | seven | * * * * * * * |
| 8 | eight | * * * * * * * * |
| 9 | nine | * * * * * * * * * |
Each row has one more star than the row above it.
6. Start at the top. Curve down to the left. Make a small ball at the bottom.
7. Draw a flat line across the top. Then slide down to the left.
8. Make a small ball. Then make another ball under it.
9. Make a small ball at the top. Then draw a straight line down.
The ball of 6 sits at the bottom.
The ball of 9 sits at the top.
Not sure which one you wrote? Put out that many stones.
Count them. Is it 6 stones or 9 stones?
Then write the numeral again.
Make four small cards. Write 6, 7, 8 and 9 on them.
Turn one card over. Read the numeral out loud.
Now put out that many stones next to the card.
Count the stones. Do they match the card?
Say the name too: six, seven, eight, nine.
Do this every day. Soon your hand will know the shapes.
Tip
Ball down is 6. Ball up is 9
