Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Let your child say each animal name after you.
Mugisha goes out of the door in the morning.
A goat is next to the house. A hen is under the chair.
Mugisha points to the goat, but he has no English word for it.
Today you will name the animals at your home.
Look around your home. What can you see?
Say each name out loud with me.
cow ... goat ... sheep ... pig
dog ... cat ... hen ... rabbit ... donkey
A donkey is big. It has long ears.
A rabbit is small. It has long ears too.
Point to one animal. Ask your friend:
What is this?
Your friend says back: It is a rabbit.
What is this? It is a cow.
What is this? It is a donkey.
Careful! Say It is a first. Then say the animal.
One sheep is a sheep.
Five sheep are sheep too.
Careful! You do not say "sheeps". This word never changes.
Other animals do change: one goat, five goats. One cow, two cows.
The mother with the small ones is a hen.
Chicken is the word for all of them.
So your hen is a chicken too.
The cow gives us milk.
Your milk is in a cup at home.
Say goat very slowly. The first sound is /g/.
Say hen very slowly. The first sound is /h/.
A song about the animals at a home like yours. Say the name of every animal you can see.
Tip
Point first. Then say the whole thing
Point to the animal and ask: What is this?
Say back: It is a goat.
And do not put an s on sheep. One sheep, many sheep.
