Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Say every sound slowly and let your child copy you.
Byiringiro plays with a ball at school.
His teacher writes b on the blackboard.
"Ball starts with this letter," she says.
Today you will meet two more letters: k and b.
This is the letter k. The big one is K.
This is the letter b. The big one is B.
Say both names out loud: k ... b.
Look at this row. Find every b and circle it.

There are three letter b. Now find every k. There are three too.
k is one long stick going down. Then add two small arms.
b is one long stick going down. Then make the tummy at the bottom.
The stick comes first. The tummy comes after.
Careful! If you make the tummy first, your b is not a b.
Write k and b six times each in the dust.
Then write the big ones: K and B.
k says /k/. You hear it at the start of kitchen.
You hear it in kite too. You can make a kite from a bag. It goes up high.
b says /b/. You hear it at the start of ball, bag, bed and baa.
Say each word very slowly. Then say only the first sound.
rabbit ... /r/. The letter is r.
kitchen ... /k/. The letter is k.
ball ... /b/. The letter is b.
under ... /u/. The letter is u.
in ... /i/. The letter is i.
Point to an animal and say its sound: the cow says moo.
Then write the letter that is missing: boo__ is book.
Watch how the hand writes the big letters. Look for K and for B.
Every letter and its sound, said slowly. Say /k/ and /b/ out loud with the song.
Tip
Stick first, then the tummy
Say it out loud while your hand moves: down ... then round.
The tummy of b sits at the bottom of the stick.
For k say: down ... then two small arms.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
Write the small letter b three times.
