Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Your child needs about thirty beans, or thirty small stones.
Gatete puts his beans in a pile, one at a time.
He counts in English: one, two, three ... ten.
Then he stops. He has more beans in his hand.
Today you will count all the way to thirty.
Say them out loud: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Put ten beans in a pile. Now go on.

Put ten more beans in the pile. Now you have twenty.
After twenty you say twenty and then a number you know.
twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty.
Put ten more beans. Now you have thirty.
Two words sound the same at the start. They are not the same number.
thirteen is 13. Say it long: thir-TEEN. The end is big and long.
thirty is 30. Say it short: THIR-ty. The end drops away.
Careful! If somebody says thirteen and you write 30, you wrote the other one.
Do it with fourteen too: four-TEEN is long, and it is 14.

Ask: How many children like rice?
Answer with the whole thing: Twelve children like rice.
Now do beans: Fifteen children like beans.
Sing the numbers one to twenty. Look at each number as you sing it.
This song goes ten to twenty. Listen for the long teen at the end of each word.
Tip
Long teen, short ty
thir-TEEN: open your mouth wide and hold the end.
THIR-ty: say it fast and let it drop.
Say the two of them one after the other. Now they do not sound the same.
Say each one out loud, then tap Show answer to check.
Count your beans from one to thirty, ten at a time.
Answer: three piles of ten beans. That is thirty.
You count up. Do you say thirteen first, or thirty first?
Answer: thirteen first. Thirteen is 13 and thirty is 30.
Say the next word: eighteen, nineteen, ___.
Answer: twenty.
Look at the table. How many children like beans? Answer with the whole thing.
Answer: Fifteen children like beans.
Write these in digits: eleven, seventeen, twenty-four.
Answer: 11, 17, 24.
