Lesson 5 of 6

Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Your child needs a stick and some dust, or a pencil and a notebook.
Habimana writes b and k in the dust. He knows them well now.
His grandmother puts her hand on her hat.
"Hat," she says. "What letter is that?"
Today you meet three new letters: h, s and v.
This is the letter h. The big one is H. Say its name: h.
This is the letter s. The big one is S. Say its name: s.
This is the letter v. The big one is V. Say its name: v.
Look at this row. Find every s and circle it.
| s | h | v | s | b | s | h | v |
There are three letter s in the row.
Now find every h. There are two. Then find every v. There are two.
h has a long stick. Go down, back up a little, then over and down.
s starts at the top. Go back, round, and then round the other way.
v is two short lines. Down to a point, then up again. No round part at all.
Write h, H, s, S, v and V six times each in the dust.
Then write them in your notebook.
h says /h/. You hear it in hat, hand, house and hen. It is a little air out of your mouth.
s says /s/. You hear it in socks, sister, six and sing.
v says /v/. You hear it in vegetables.
Put your top teeth on your bottom lip. Now push out air and let your lip buzz. That is /v/.
Do the same mouth with no buzz. That is /f/, as in food.
Put one finger on your throat. /v/ shakes your finger. /f/ does not.
Careful! Do not say f for the first letter of vegetables. It is v.

Every letter and the sound it makes. Wait for h, for s and for v, and say them out loud.
Tip
Feel it, do not only listen
/h/ is air on your hand. Hold your hand in front of your mouth and say hat.
/v/ is a buzz on your lip. Teeth on lip, and buzz.
/f/ is the same mouth with the buzz switched off.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
