Lesson 6 of 6
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this page out loud. Your child needs a stick and some dust, or a pencil and a notebook.
Umutoni goes out to wash her hands.
She sees the cow. She sees the door of the house.
Three new letters are standing outside with her.
Today you meet w, c and d.
This is w. The big one is W. Say its name: w.
This is c. The big one is C. Its name sounds like "see".
This is d. The big one is D. Say its name: d.
Look at this row. Find every d and circle it.
| d | w | b | c | d | b | w | d |
There are three letter d in the row. Two of them look like d, but they are b.
Now find every w. There are two.
w is down, up, down, up. Four lines and no round part.
c starts at the top. Go round to the left and stop. Do not close it.
d is a round tummy and then a long stick.
Write w, c and d six times each in the dust. Then write W, C and D.
You met b before. Now look at the two of them.
b has its stick first, then its tummy.
d has its tummy first, then its stick.
Careful! Do not write b at the start of door. It is d.
w says /w/. You hear it in water, wash and window.
c is called "see", but in cow, cat, cup, cassava and carrot it says /k/. The name and the sound are not the same thing.
d says /d/. You hear it in door, dog and desk.
Say n and m again. n has one hump. m has two humps.

b and d look the same, but they are not. Watch and do it with your hands.
Tip
Stick first, or tummy first
b: stick, then tummy.
d: tummy, then stick.
