Telling Stories
Lesson 2 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read this out loud. Ask your child to tell you their morning, one part at a time.
Mugisha tells his friend about his morning.
"I wake up. I wash. I eat. I go to school."
It all comes out in one go. His friend cannot hear the parts.
Today you will learn five words that hold a story together.
Here are your five words:
first, then, next, after that, finally.
First opens the story.
Then, next and after that move you on.
Finally shuts the story.
Listen to Mugisha now:
First I wake up.
Then I wash my face.
Next I put on my uniform.
After that I eat my breakfast.
Finally I go to school.
Now his friend can hear every part. Nothing is mixed up.
Careful! then is easy to say, so it comes out five times.
"Then I wash. Then I eat. Then I go."
That is not good. Use each word one time.
Say first at the beginning. Say finally at the end. Put the other three in the middle.

A song about getting ready. One thing, then one more thing. Listen to the order.
Tip
First opens, finally shuts
Think of your door at home. First opens it. Finally shuts it.
The three words in the middle walk you from the door to the end.
If you hear yourself say then, then, then, stop. Take a new word.
Say each one out loud, then tap Show answer to check.
